Fame comes with a lot of things. Sometimes, it becomes hard for a person to cope with it and in attempts to find a coping mechanism, the hallucinating realm of drugs is looked upon as a remedy for many. Here are ten such Hollywood celebrities who went for drugs for some of the other reasons and messed themselves up real bad.
Coming from the famous Barrymore family that was well established in Hollywood, Drew Barrymore came in the limelight at an early age. She was smoking cigarettes at nine, drinking at the age of eleven, puffing weed at twelve and at thirteen, she was snorting cocaine. At fourteen she attempted suicide and was sent to the rehab twice from where she recovered on this front.
In July 2007, when it had been just two weeks since Lindsay Lohan had walked out of a rehab, she was charged with possession of cocaine and driving under the influence of the drug. Lohan released a statement in which she said: “it is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs.” Since then Lohan has been in a bad streak of life and although it is not completely known whether she is done with the drugs for once and ever, she has been probation free since May 2015, which makes her actually free for the first time in eight years.
On October 31, 1993, the popular actor and teen heart-throb River Phoenix died due to a drug overdose outside the Viper Club in LA that was owned by Johnny Depp. Depp was then already coping with his disastrous relationship with model Kate Moss. This incident broke him down and he looked for a relief in drugs. However, since his plunge in drugs didn’t affect his acting career or personal life at all, not much is known about it publicly.
Robert Downey, Jr.
Robert Downey, Jr. was exposed to addiction at the early age of six when his father introduced and encouraged him to smoke marijuana. Other drugs like cocaine and heroin entered soon in his life, and at eight he was completely in it. From 1996 to 2001, he underwent a lot of drug treatments but was unsuccessful in shedding them off his back. After a lot of troubled times with drugs and spending some time in prison for it, Downey was finally successfully out of the turmoil. In the Oprah Winfrey show in November 2004, he said famously said, ‘… and I reached out for help, and I ran with it. You can reach out for help in kind of a half-assed way and you’ll get it and you won’t take advantage of it. It’s not that difficult to overcome these seemingly ghastly problems…what’s hard is to decide to do it.’ Since his bad streak with drugs has ended, the talented actor has only always soared and is one of the most popular and highest paid actors in Hollywood today.
Heath Ledger, whom his former fiancée Michelle Williams described as, he had too much energy. His mind was turning, turning, turning – always turning’, died on January 22, 2008. The autopsy showed that his death had been a result of the consumption of a combined mixture of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine. Although these are prescription drugs, the mixture of diazepam, oxycodone and hydrocodone is very deadly and it points to a possibility that Ledger was trying to intoxicate himself for some reasons.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Although very little is known about the personal life of Phillip Seymour Hoffman which is how he liked to keep it, he confessed in an interview in 2006 that he suffered drug abuse in his youth and laid his hands on any drug that he came across. And although he was known to be sober later, his death in 2014 revealed something different. Detectives searching his home found heroin in the house and it was revealed that Hoffman was found with a syringe in his arm. The cause of Hoffman’s death was concluded to be an acute mixed drug intoxication, including heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamine.
River Phoenix, the teen heart-throb died on October 31, 1993, outside Johnny Depp’s nightclub in LA. Phoenix suffered a drug overdose and collapsed outside the club. The death reports showed that Phoenix had an acute multiple drug intoxication, including cocaine and morphine. Although he was not known as a drug addict, Phoenix’s seemingly first encounter with drugs resulted in his death, ending the most promising career that was about to be.
Elvis Presley had a significant history with drugs. In 1974 he overdosed on barbiturates, spending three days in a coma in his hotel suite after the first incident. After that, the drugs became more common in his life and he went on to do shows in the state of a high more often. A daily consumption of pharmacopoeia had made him impossible to leave his bed and whenever he went to perform on a stage, he could barely talk. On August 16, 1977, Presley was found dead in the bathroom of his hotel suite and an autopsy revealed that 14 different drugs were found in his system.
Angelina Jolie has confessed that by the age of 20 she has tried ‘just about every drug possible’. Her drug consumption has been said to include LSD, cocaine and heroin among others. According to Jolie, drugs have a very bad effect on life if one goes in it with negativity. ‘I left them back a long time ago’, she admits.
Billie Joe Armstrong
The lead vocalist of Green Day went to a rehab in 2012 to cope with his ‘substance’ use. In an interview with the Rolling Stones magazine he talked about his drug abuse, ‘I started combining them to a point where I didn’t know what I was taking during the day and what I was taking at night.’ The artist has, however, reportedly been clean of the drugs since the end of his rehabilitation.
